Allow children to be with parents this holiday, PS urges teachers

By Roy Hezron

Principal Secretary in the State Department for Early Learning and Basic Education Dr. Julius Jwan has asked teachers to let parents have quality time with their children during this short school holiday.

He said the teachers should not hold the learners in school for holiday tuition saying the learners needed a break the government had provided to allow them to relax.

Dr. Jwan made the remarks during the Kenya Private Schools Association Annual Conference in Mombasa on July 5th.

The PS was reacting to reports that some head teachers had refused to allow children to break for the school holiday and had continued to teach against the government directive that they let children to break for the 10-day holiday.

“Give parents time to be with their children,” Dr. Jwan urged teachers.

The Ministry of Education has provided a school calendar where it has allocated breaks to allow learners to relax and bond with their children as part of their growth and development.

The Basic Education Act outlaws holiday tuition and any person who violates the provision commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding one hundred thousand shillings or to imprisonment not exceeding six months or both.
