All systems go as Mukumu Girls reopens tomorrow

Mukumu reopens reporting

It is all systems go as Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School reopens on Monday, weeks after it was closed down due to an outbreak of a mysterious ailment that claimed the lives of three students and a teacher.

It was a beehive of activities at the school in Shinyalu Constituency, Kakamega County this morning as teachers started streaming in while the support staff were tidying up the compound.

Public health officers were not taking anything to chance as they continued testing water and new supplies of foodstuff being brought in.

The Kakamega County Education Executive Godfrey Owori said all the 17 tonnes of contaminated maize and beans that were ferried to Bamburi Cement Factory in Mombasa had been destroyed through incineration.

“I accompanied the cargo and witnessed the destruction on Friday and Saturday. It is a fresh start at Mukumu Girls,” he told Education News.

Owori, who previously served as Principal of, among others, St. Peter’s Mumias Boys, Barding and St. Antony Kitale, assured parents of Mukumu that the situation had been contained and that they should not be worried while returning their children.

The school Principal Jane Mmbone said they were ready to start receiving the learners who will first undergo guidance and counselling sessions together with their parents and guardians.

“We have received immense support from the national and county governments, the Catholic Church who are our sponsors, neighbouring schools, the political leadership and other well-wishers and we are good to go,” Ms. Mmbone said.

Kakamega Catholic Bishop Joseph Obanyi will lead spiritual nourishment and encouragement to the students through a special mass.

Governor Fernandes Barasa and Shinyalu MP Fred Ikana will also be available to receive and support the girls and their parents.
