All students should participate in co-curricular activities, Regional Director says

By Peter Otuoro

Rift Valley Regional Director of Education (RDE) Milton Nzioka has urged heads of institutions in Primary and Secondary schools in the Rift Valley Regions to ensure all students participate in co-curricular activities to enable them to be all-round students.

Speaking in Nakuru City, Nzioka said co-curricular activities play a major role in molding students’ character and in talent generation, as he highlighted that it should be considered as part of the process of learning to all students.

He said all students in primary and secondary schools including learners in Special Needs Education (SNE) institutions have a right to participate in co-curricular activities and should be allowed to exploit their talents by participating in co-curricular activities.

Nzioka said that he was happy that most schools participated in this years’ Rift valley Regional drama festival which was held at Kitale in Trans Nzoia County.

“Many schools participated in Regional drama festival held at Kitale, we receive students as far as Turkana, West Pokot, Samburu and other counties within Rift Valley. As Ministry of Education, we want students to fully-participate in those co-curricular activities to positively mold them,” said Nzioka.

He revealed that in drama festivals, various cultures were displayed by students and it is good to give them an opportunity to learn their culture through music and dramas.

The RDE said that the Ministry of Education has programmed various co-curricular activities this term to enable all students to exploit their various talents in their respective schools.

“For the last three years, schools did not have opportunities to participate in co-curricular activities and many Kenyans witness a lot of unrest in schools, it is good to know that when students are given opportunity to fully participate in co-curricular activities they are happy because they use the energy to exploit their talents and they can never be involved in evil activities while in schools,” said Nzioka.

Nziaoka revealed that Regional Science and Engineering competitions will be held in Bomet County next month (April 9 to April 12, 2023), in which students will showcase their skills in Science and Engineering fields.

He also indicated that Regional sport term one games will be held in Eldoret in Uasin Gishu County between April 4 to April 9, 2023.

The Director added that learners in SNE institutions in Primary and Secondary Schools will have an Athletics competition which will be held in Nakuru County between April 14 to April 19, 2023.

He also urged parents to support their children’s talents and assist in molding them to make them be all-round students who can fit anywhere.

Rift Valley Region is the biggest Region in Kenya with 14 counties which include West Pokot, Samburu, Narok, Kajiado, Turkana, Bomet, Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Kericho, Baringo, Laikipia and Nakuru County.
