All 5,692 examiners for this year’s KCPE, overseeing English Composition, Kiswahili Insha, and Kenyan Sign Language, have been promptly paid, as confirmed by Dr. Belio Richard Kipsang, the Principal Secretary in the State Department for Basic Education.

This announcement coincided with the release of the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) at Mitihani House.

Dr. Kipsang reassured examiners set to mark the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) that their payments will be expedited immediately upon completing the marking process.

“We have paid all our KCPE examiners. We also want to assure my colleagues in KCSE that we shall ensure that they are paid within the time that is required of us to pay,” he affirmed.

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) had previously protested delayed payments for 2022 KCSE examiners, even threatening to boycott this year’s marking.

The National Assembly Committee on Education, chaired by Julius Melly, raised concerns about inadequate remuneration and delayed payments for examiners, invigilators, and supervisors ahead of the 2023 KCSE.

The committee recommended increased funding to the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) for competitive and timely remuneration, efficient transport of examination materials and personnel, and improved accommodation for examiners at marking centers.

Dr. Kipsang added that the Ministry is collaborating with the National Treasury to expedite first-term capitation payments, ensuring a smooth school reopening in January 2024.
