Aggressive road safety campaign launched in Nyamira County

OCPD Charles Rono speaks during the launch of an aggressive road safety campaign in Nyamira County, urging stakeholder support to curb rising accidents.

Manga Subcounty in Nyamira has launched an aggressive campaign that aims at promoting road safety in the region.

Speaking to the public during the launch at Manga Town, Area Officer Commanding, Police Department (OCPD) Charles Rono said the exercise will incorporate owners of driving schools, all students who are on holiday during August, and their parents.

Other bodies that will participate in the exercise include the Traffic Base Commanders’ Office, bodaboda groups, schools, bus drivers, and public matatu drivers.

“We are calling upon all stakeholders to support this campaign by either their physical participation or sending their blessings and wishes,” he said.

The police decried the high number of deaths occurring through road accidents. They blamed some traffic police officers who accept bribes from traffic offenders at the expense of innocent passengers.

“Some of our police officers accept bribes and allow unworthy vehicles to operate on roads and kill people,” he said.

He asked the public to report such corrupt officers to the authorities for their immediate relief from their duties and for them to be replaced by people of integrity.

He said that the initiative, led by traffic experts, will seek to synergise the drivers and bodaboda riders to view their careers not only as a means to earn a living but also as a way to take care of the people they carry.

He lamented the large number of deaths, especially the students, caused by road accidents in the country and blamed some institutions for recycling drivers, some of whom have poor sight, which hinders them from good visibility on our roads.

“I am not against retired drivers who seek employment in driving school buses, but request them to understand what it means to retire and go to the farm to take care of their gardens and livestock, ” he said.

He appealed to parents to allow their children to attend such meetings during the school Holidays to learn essential lessons that will enable them to become good ambassadors for road safety campaigns.
