ABSA Bank donates laboratory, computers to Kipsangui Girls

Kipsangui Girls High School in Uasin Gishu has received a modern computer laboratory and 20 computers installed courtesy of sponsorship from Absa Bank Kenya.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, the county Governor Jonathan Bii thanked the locals for giving out land to facilitate construction of the project which will enable the school to offer quality computer studies.

He urged the girls to take advantage of the opportunity to gain the necessary skills and competence to advance their careers.

“The world has fully embraced the digital way and this lab is an opportunity for students and residents to equip themselves with these in-demand ICT skills,” he said.

Bii however expressed the need for schools within the county to focus on improving their general performance even as efforts are made to enhance infrastructure.

“Development of a school is not by buildings and infrastructure but performance. There is always room for improvement regarding academic performance,” he said.

The county Education CECM Dr. Janet Kosgei said that the opening of the lab provides a golden opportunity for learners to change their lives through innovation and interact with global academia.

“We thank Absa Bank for bringing change in education through digitization,” she said.

She also noted that the school is expected to register an improvement with the new facility now at its disposal.

The initiative is part of a Ksh25 million nationwide digital literacy efforts led by ABSA Bank Kenya in collaboration with Computer for Schools Kenya (CFSK).

Each of the labs includes 20 fully networked desktop PCs and furniture to promote suitable e-learning environments.

The Bank’s Head of Corporate Relations and Sustainability, Charles Wokabi said the initiative is aligned with the bank’s Citizenship Agenda and complements the government’s digital literacy programme.

“Education is a catalyst for positive social change within our communities and access to basic digital skills will empower young Kenyans with the tools and capabilities they need to succeed and thrive in today’s rapidly evolving world. This computer lab will enable students to explore a wide range of educational resources across the web and engage in collaborative learning experiences,” he said.

The school Principal Naomi Muhika thanked the Bank for the donation, saying the labs will go a long way in developing fundamental digital skills relevant to the young generation and community as a whole.

The Bank aims to fully equip and furnish over 70 computer labs in select primary and secondary schools across Kenya.  So far, the initiative has reached 53 schools and impacted close to 53,000 students countrywide.
