Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ababu Namwamba has asked the youth to participate in the Kenya National Innovation Week which will be held in November 2023.

The CS, who was speaking on Monday at Maasai Lodge Hotel in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County during the Youth Peace and Security meeting, said that to participate the youth are only required to share their innovation online.

Their applications will be analyzed by experts and the most promising innovative concepts will be selected and awarded before being implemented within the country and beyond.

He said that this is among the government’s efforts to empower the youth to bring forth solutions to mitigate problems facing the country and Africa.

Namwamba tipped the youth to centre their innovations around agriculture saying that it is the core driver of the economy and the youth in other countries are also capitalizing on it.

“Young people do not find agriculture cool since the image of agriculture is a 65-year-old woman with a jembe and a child on her back looking tired and disinterested,” Ababu said.

He added that innovations in fishing, beadwork and other sectors will also be welcomed.

The CS said that the best ideas will be incubated by the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA) and the best innovators will receive grants of up to Ksh5 million every year to realize the commercial potential of their innovations.

The Innovation expo will be followed by the Commonwealth Innovation Day which will see the Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland visit the country for the event together with a number of Heads of State.

Further, in December the country will also host the Youth Connect Africa Summit themed: “Youth Innovating a Borderless Africa” and will bring together over 20,000 young people together.
