18,000 teachers set for CBC training

Buoyed by success in the recent Grade Four assessments, the government is preparing to fully resume face-to-face learning amidst surging cases of the Covid-19 with 18,000 teachers set to undergo Competence-Based Curriculum training.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has rolled out training plans for teachers of CBC from 23rd November to 5th December 2020.

According to the circular released by TSC National Director of Quality Assurance and Standards Dr. Reuben Nthamburi to TSC Regional directors, the training will be carried out as the school terms progress on the stipulated dates.

According to the circular, the training will be carried out in two phases at the county and zonal levels.

The first session will be Training of Trainers (TOTS), Curriculum Support Officers (CSO) and CBC champions, Special Needs Education CBC (SNE) champions from 23rd to 28th November at the county level.

This is followed by Teacher Training in each zone at the zonal level from 29th November to 5th December.  SNE teachers will also be trained at the zonal level then.

Nthamburi in the circular added that National Masters Training will train the Curriculum Support Officers (CSO) and CBC champions at the county level.

Headteachers will be required to attend the training for one day followed by zonal teacher training where teachers will be trained for 5 days.

In a further breakdown, both regular and special school tutors from Grade One to three will be represented by one teacher per Grade while two teachers will represent Grade Four.

While warning against replacing CBC Champions Dr.  Nthamburi, urged county directors to appoint two CBC champions to deliver the training in areas without CSOs.

TSC has trained 339,743 both public and private school tutors on CBC so far.  Besides, plans to roll out CBC for Grade Five are on the roll. Last week Basic Education PS Dr. Belio Kipsang confirmed that all books for Grade Five have been approved, printed and distributed.

The rollout comes in the wake of Education CS Prof Magoha and Health CS Kagwe argument over the safety of learners.
