A Section of Abagusii Council of Elders and Development have appealed to the government to reopen the Universities as soon as possible in order to reduce the rate of teenage pregnancies in the region.
Led by John Obaga, the elders claim that university male students are the main agents of teenage pregnancies in the villages.
The elders said that most of the male university students possess laptops and luxurious mobile phones which they use as baits to lure innocent and vulnerable girls to satiate their sexual desires.
Elders echoed that most of the these men are close relatives to the girls who always fall victims of the unprotected sex as a result of their blind trust on the men who are supposed to be their mentors.
“These boys use laptops in the pretext of teaching the young girls but in the process they introduce them into pornographic sites with an aim of seducing their minds into sex and as expected they are innocently and blindly pulled into playing sex under excitement that draws them into darkness,” Obaga said.
It is in this background that the Council strongly believes that the only way to reduce pregnancies in the region is by opening universities and tertiary colleges.
However, Obaga’s sentiments were shunned by the Chairman of Abagusii Council of Elders Matundura Araka who said that getting rid of the university students will not solve the teenage pregnancies suggesting that the only way to reduce the rising rates of unplanned pregnancies is by teaching young girls exclusively on the need of avoiding premarital sex.
“Our girls are too young to understand their body development hence it should be the responsibility of both parents to enlighten them,” said Mr. Araka.
Matundura appealed to both young male and female students to uphold social chastity because it is a societal obligation.
The chairman’s appeal was also supported by Bishop John Omang’i of the Anglican Church in the western Region.
The Bishop blamed the youth for their indulgence in premarital sex citing that it is against the teachings of the church.
