Learning activities were temporarily suspended at Nyora Primary in Nyatike Sub County following the raging floods that has hit the region limiting accessibility to the school.

Migori County Director of Education Elizabeth Otieno said they have opted to suspend learning until the water level subsides.

She noted that most schools are not accessible to learners because of the floods that also pose risk to children.

“The ministry is also working closely with other education stakeholders to see that learners in other schools which have not been greatly affected by floods remain safe,” said Otieno.

A spot check done by the Education News established that several schools including Modi Primary and Secondary schools have also been affected.

Samwel Ochieng, a teacher at St.Pauls Secondary, confirmed that most of their students who cross River Oyani to school have had challenges accessing the school after the bridge was swept by floods.
Locals led by Peter Ochieng have also asked the government to construct a proper bridge across the river in due course.
