State urged to increase universities funding

Government funding for universities has been underscored as a critical component in in uplifting standards of higher education in the country.

Migori County Women Representative Dr Pamela Odhiambo and Tigania West Member of Parliament Dr John Mutunga said as legislators they will stand to ensure all public universities receive adequate funding from the government.

They were speaking during Meru University graduation ceremony recently.

Dr Odhiambo said universities should be fully funded to advance new knowledge, innovation and technology, which is appropriate for a country’s development.

She urged universities to intensify their levels of research as way of convincing the government to allocate more funds to them.

Commission for University Education Chairman Prof Chacha Nyaigoti observed that university education in the country had made tremendous growth urging on all institutions’ leaderships to focus on providing quality education.

Meru University Chancellor Dr James Mwangi noted that global trade and opportunities are associated with human capital requirements which then demand that universities align themselves towards building sustainable and competitive advantage in human capital investment.

The chancellor urged universities to realign their curriculum to focus on sustainable life skills, critical thinking, innovation, creativity and hands-on problem solving techniques.
