A village in Bondo sub County is mourning death of their loved ones who died in a gold mining site.

Those who perished in the gold mining site in Nango trading center include a form four student at Uyawi secondary School who reportedly left school to get a haircut.

He was identified as Nicholas Arwa 23 years and according to the school’s principal James Calvin Miyara, the candidate had been given permission to go home and shave but failed to report back.

The other two students were identified as David Ochieng Duro 27 years who is said to be a student at Egerton University Nakuru campus and 21 year old David Ochieng Juma also a student of a secondary school in the sub county whose identity the authorities did not disclose.

Father of the form four student Titus Arwa Ogonji said he received information that his son alongside two other people had been killed at a mining site at Nango area.

Family members of the Egerton University said the student visited his in-laws who reside at Nyang’oma trading center and went to work at the mining sites with his brother.

Bondo sub County deputy Commissioner Tom Macheneri visited the scene and ordered all mining sites in Bondo to be closed indefinitely.

“After assessment of the area, we have resolved that the mining sites remain closed because they have not met safety standards provided by NEMA” he said.

He claimed that his office wasn’t aware of the illegal mining activities going on in the area.

“I have directed all the national government administration officers in this sub county to enforce the ban on mining in the unlicensed sites.” he added.

But the locals accused the government officials of ignoring their request to act, their officers on the ground were made aware of it.

A visit by Education News across the area established that the mining sites at Wagusu, Abimbo, and three other sites at Nango were all operational hours after the DC banned the mining.
