By Kiprono Moi

The County Government of Nakuru will in the next two weeks commence a training programme for staff on sign language as a way of addressing challenges faced by the hearing impaired persons.

Speaking in Nakuru town during the launch of Sign Language for All-SIFA programme, Director Social Services, Josephat Kimemia said the county will roll out the training for staff as a way of ensuring equality in terms of service delivery.

According to Kimemia, sign language should not only be left for the hearing impaired persons but for all to ease communication hence the county’s move.

“The county is also coming up with a programme that will ensure that we have one or two persons trained in sign language in all our health facilities,” he said.

SIFA Executive Director, Wanjiru Ndii said the organization will be working to train more to ensure equality towards service delivery in the society.

“Sign language has continued to be undermined in society and that is why as SIFA we shall continue to train all to ensure equality” said Ndii.

Ngala Secondary School for the Deaf Principal, Pauline Kimani called on society to embrace sign language and urged the county government to hire hearing impaired graduates.
