Teachers: co-curricular activities funding low

By Florence Norah

Rongo Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Branch Executive Secretary, Eunice Bosco, has called on the government to consider reviewing the allocations meant to facilitate students in early childhood centres, primary and secondary schools to participate in co-curricular activities.

Bosco expressed her disappointment that teachers at times have to spend their own money on the activities.

“I urge the government to consider having teachers in the process of preparing the budget to avoid cases where by teachers are forced to use their money in facilitation of co-curricular activities,” she said.

She claimed the allocations made to fund the sports and performing arts is not enough considering the increasing number of students in schools.

Migori County Music and Drama Festival Chair, Francis Oswago, said some of the sub-counties had failed to be represented at the county level due to lack of funds.

“Schools from Nyatike sub-county have not been represented at the county level because they did not have funds to transport they participants to Kuja Secondary School for the Deaf in Rongo where the competitions were held,” said Oswago.

He urged Governor Okoth Obado to organize for a county gala to encourage the children in nurturing their talents and help them appreciate different cultures.
