KNUT boss tells govt to increase JSS infrastructure, says it’s inadequate

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Chepkoilel Branch Executive Secretary, Sammy Bor wants the government through the Ministry of Education to invest more in infrastructure for Junior Secondary Schools (JSSs) for success.

Speaking to the press, Bor said that there were few classrooms compared to the number of students who will be joining the JSSs.

“The government has done well in ensuring that there is a smooth transition. However, there are gray areas that require efforts by the government in terms of infrastructure, which we have a feeling that it might not be adequate to manage the 100 percent transition and the double intake which this country is going to witness next year,” he said.

He added that the classrooms and other infrastructural facilities the government had put in place were not adequate to handle the number of students that will be enrolled early next year.

“On the issue of training teachers, they have done it but it’s not adequate as per what the curriculum demands of them because this is a huge transition and it requires a serious look into this arrangement,” Bor observed.

He advised the incoming government to be very careful while making any changes to the education system.

“We are talking about the lives of our children and our future and when we mess up with the education sector we have messed up with everything, therefore before making any changes let’s research first,” he noted.

He said the education sector is key in any country therefore a lot of care should be taken.

“I want to advise the new administration as they craft their government on who to lead the education sector, they should be very careful. Prof Magoha has done well in terms of transition and he is passionate, bringing a new person will mess up the whole equation and we support the government to give him time to continue with the administration as they wait for another CS,” he added.

He later on congratulated President-elect William Ruto on his recent election as the Country’s 5th president.

“I want to congratulate William Ruto on his election. We know he is equal to the task because he transformed the sector while he was the Education Minister,” he added.
