A school in Embu County has outlined dress code of their members of staff which must be adhered to.

St Mary’s Gachoka Girls Secondary School management indicated that the staff must adhere to the school dress code since type, style and appearance of dress communicates about the wearer.

In a notice to the staff dated 5th September 2022, the management directed that gentlemen will be required to dress in long sleeved shirts and pair of official trousers. Khaki trousers, pipe trousers and jeans will not be allowed.

It recommends trouser suits, official coats or jackets (no hoodies) while shoes are supposed to be of black or brown leather.

The men are also supposed to put on a tie, comb their hair and have a clean shave. The management discouraged them from box and trendy hairstyles.

On the other hand, ladies are supposed to dress in short or long-sleeved dresses or blouses. The school will not allow sleeveless blouses and the length of dress or skirt should not be above the knees.

The management shall not allow tight dresses, skirts or trousers. If a trouser is worn, the blouse should be below the hips length.

For the ladies, skirts suits are also most suitable paired with official coats or jackets and like the gentlemen, ladies are discouraged from dressing in hoodies.

Furthermore, the ladies are also expected to put on black or brown leather shoes or matching shoes with the dress or skirt. They are also required to have neat braided hairstyle or well combed hair.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) manual of code of conduct and regulations states that tutors should dress decently and be presentable.

Most teachers around the country feel that the TSC should put into account the views of tutors and fashion trends when revising and implementing a formal dress code.
