Counties urged to honour former sports champions

By Oanga Oyugi

The county governments of Kisii and Nyamira have been accused of failing to honour sportsmen from the region who earned Kenya a good reputation in the international arena.
Athletics Kenya regional Public Relations Officer Peter Angwenyi pointed out Nyantika Mayioro, Naftal Temu, Charles Asati and Robert Ouko, who reigned in sports during the 1960s have not been recognized even by naming stadiums after them.
According to Angwenyi recognising the heroes and heroines in sports will make sports competitive among the youth.
Angwenyi noted Kisii County should assist Cardinal Otunga high school to upgrade its track field to handle more events.
Angwenyi urged the two county governments to start training camps in every constituency to tap local talents and put up more sporting facilities.
