Train on how to handle children with dyslexia, teachers told

Teachers have been challenged to train on how to help children with learning difficulties.
Dyslexia Organization of Kenya Founder Nancy Gichuki said many teachers and parents have little information about dyslexia and this has contributed to mistreatment of the children in schools.
Dyslexia is a condition where children have trouble reading accurately and fluently.
Speaking after holding a workshop to sensitize the teachers about the condition at Vicodec, Ongata Rongai, Gichuki said little has been done to give those affected a good learning environment.
She said most children with the condition are mishandled and many drop out of school, while those who remain perform poorly.
Gichuki said the organisation which consists of parents with dyslexia children has been able to hold workshops around the country.
“We have to create awareness to ensure these children are given support rather than being called names or beaten,” she said.
Elizabeth Kamene of Gethsemane International School in Oloolua, who attended the training, urged the Government do more to create awareness on the condition.
Around 10 per cent of children in the country are affected.
