Orphaned children and those from vulnerable backgrounds in Kajiado East Sub County have benefited from Sh24.5 million National Government-Constituency Development Fund to boost education in the region.
The 5,000 needy children benefited from the disbursement of cash, with secondary school beneficiaries getting Sh12 million.
The disbursement exercise was presided over by Kajiado East Member of Parliament, Mrs Peris Tobiko who called on area residents to embrace public participation forums and help in identifying bursary beneficiaries.
“Issuance of bursary has always been a debate owing to massive alleged irregularities, but I have opted for a village approach so that we lock out biased persons from misappropriating the funds,” the legislator stated.
Unlike in previous years, all orphaned children were given full scholarship to ensure they remain in school.
Beneficiaries were also identified by locals at the location level and not by the NG-CDF committee.
The beneficiaries lauded the move saying it has reduced alleged corruption. The Sub-County had set regulations that the proposed list of beneficiaries would not be adjusted by the CDF committee.
“In the previous years we have had a lot of complaints as from time to time over names of beneficiaries being changed by the CDF committee to the chagrin of the needy,” said Jane Pilaso, a beneficiary.
