The clergy in Nyanza region have called on the Ministry of Education to consider the services of spiritual leaders in all schools to mitigate on the decaying morals in learning institutions.
Led by Rev. George Osida of the Anglican Diocese of Southern Nyanza, the church leaders regretted that students have dangerously become unruly and undisciplined owing to the new trends that have replaced good traditions that ruled schools.
The church leaders were reacting to a shocking incident where a female teacher in Kisumu County was arraigned before a Maseno court for allegedly luring school girls into lesbianism.
The students held demonstrations demanding the sacking of the randy female teacher.
This prompted the Education Ministry officials and county security team to intervene and arrest the teacher.
“Most of these big schools were sponsored by churches and a lot of emphasis was employed on instilling spiritual nourishment alongside the academic knowledge and it has helped,” said Rev. Osida.
Rev. Osida spoke to Education News in Kisii town.
“There’s a parenting challenge existing in the society today, as most children come from single parenting,” he observed.
The clergy urged the ministry to move with speed and reconsider incorporating church in running of schools.
He noted the new curriculum will produce job creators not employment seekers since it enhances talents and creativity.
“In the past we have had students who only study to get good papers for promotions and not new knowledge, this has created a gap in productivity,” said Rev. Osida.
