Lenku irked by students’ poor results in exams

Governor Joseph ole Lenku recently said he is gravely disturbed by the dismal performance of students in national examinations in Kajiado County.
The Governor made the remark when he officially opened a one-day national dialogue on education quality in Kajiado at the Masai Technical Training Institute.
“When you consider the 2017 KCSE results, approximately 7 per cent of the students who sat for the examinations, attained C+ and above, it calls for many questions as to why we are not in competition with other parts of the country,” noted Lenku.
He said about 40 per cent of the students who sat for KCSE scored D- and below.
“Kajiado people miss out on job opportunities as many of them are not able to meet educational minimums, nationally, to get into the job market,” lamented the Governor.
The remedy, Lenku said, seems to lie in breaking the vicious circle and restoring the confidence of the people of Kajiado in future of the education sector as a whole.
“To overhaul a failed education system in the county, there is need for a marshal plan that will require the consensus of all stakeholders in the sector,” he said.
The Governor urged stakeholders from the private sector to pool resources towards the attainment of the proposed marshal plan. The forum was graced by representatives from institutions of higher learning and individuals playing important roles in pursuit of quality education in the county.
Lenku, who was accompanied by nominated senator Mary Seneta, said access to quality education is key to achieving sustainable development goals.
The role of this sustainable development goal is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education to promote lifelong learning opportunities for all, Lenku said.
Kajiado CEC member for education said the forum provided a great opportunity to deliberate on issues of education and charting the way forward together.
