Long-serving Umoja Senior School Principal Sosten Tabut is set to retire, bringing to a close a decades-long career in Kenya’s education sector.
Tabut has served as the head of Umoja Secondary School in Turbo Sub-County, Uasin Gishu County, where he has played a key role in the institution’s growth, administration and academic development.
The school, now known as Umoja Senior School following the transition to the Competency-Based Education system, has grown significantly during his tenure.
In a profile published in 2022, Tabut said he had spent 25 years in the teaching profession, including 18 years in school leadership. Before taking charge at Umoja, he taught in several institutions, gaining experience that would later shape his approach to school administration and mentorship.

At Umoja, he oversaw an increase in enrolment as the institution expanded its programmes and facilities. In 2023, Tabut said the school had more than 1,000 learners, while highlighting the need for additional infrastructure and teachers to cope with the growing population.
Beyond academic matters, Tabut has also been involved in initiatives aimed at improving learners’ welfare. In 2026, he was reported to be supporting a mental wellness programme at the school involving trained teachers and mental health professionals to help learners deal with emotional and psychological challenges.
His career has also involved mentorship and support for learners from disadvantaged backgrounds, as he combined classroom teaching with school leadership responsibilities.
Tabut’s retirement marks the end of an era at an institution where he has spent several years guiding learners, teachers and the wider school community.

Umoja Senior School is a public day institution in Turbo Sub-County and currently operates as a C4 senior school, offering pathways under the Competency-Based Education system.
