Veteran Kenyan author John Kiriamiti has made a return to the literary scene with a new crime novel that examines the difficult choices that arise when authorities bend the rules in the name of justice.
The Abduction Squad, published by East African Educational Publishers (EAEP) through its Spear Books imprint, was launched at the Nairobi International Book Fair at Sarit Expo Centre.
The book is Kiriamiti’s sixth published work and comes more than a decade after his last book, marking his return to fiction after a lengthy break.
It also reconnects the author with EAEP more than 40 years after the publisher brought out his debut work, My Life in Crime, which helped establish Kiriamiti as a prominent voice in Kenya’s crime writing genre.
Set in the imaginary Republic of Magendo, The Abduction Squad centres on Tom Baraza, a newly appointed Police Commissioner who is confronted with an unusual challenge following the sudden death of his predecessor.
Instead of relying entirely on conventional policing methods, Baraza devises a controversial strategy, recruiting a group of convicted criminals and putting their individual skills to use in a covert operation.
The men are drawn from the criminal world but are tasked with working for an institution whose primary responsibility is to enforce the law.
Their mission sets up the central conflict of the novel: whether those entrusted with maintaining law and order can justify using people and methods that fall outside the law.
Crime, power and difficult choices
Kiriamiti said the book explores the consequences of such decisions and the difficult choices made when conventional approaches are considered inadequate.
“What happens when people who have lived outside the law are brought together and given a task in the name of the very institutions meant to uphold the law?” he said.

By creating a fictional country rather than directly using a real government or security institution, Kiriamiti provides room to explore the subject without anchoring the story to a particular political system.
The novel nevertheless tackles issues familiar to societies where questions of accountability, abuse of authority and the limits of state power continue to generate debate.
Its unusual premise also allows the author to reverse the traditional crime story perspective.
Rather than concentrating solely on criminals and their activities, Kiriamiti turns attention to the institutions fighting crime and asks what happens when those institutions adopt unconventional tactics.
The resulting tension revolves around loyalty, responsibility and the possibility that an operation intended to restore order could itself create new ethical and legal problems.
Kiriamiti returns to crime fiction
Kiriamiti’s literary career has been closely associated with crime writing. His previous works include My Life with a Criminal, The Sinister Trophy, Son of Fate and My Life in Prison.
His latest book continues that interest while widening the focus to the relationship between criminals and the authorities pursuing them.
EAEP Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kiarie Kamau said the publication was significant both for the publisher and for its long association with Kiriamiti.
“John Kiriamiti has been part of EAEP’s journey for more than four decades, and The Abduction Squad represents an important continuation of that relationship,” Mr Kamau said.
He said the novel raises important questions about crime, authority and the consequences of crossing the boundaries between lawful enforcement and criminality.
The book’s unveiling at the Nairobi International Book Fair also brought Kiriamiti’s work back before readers and members of the publishing industry after his long absence from fiction.
For Kiriamiti, the latest publication represents both a return to a genre that has defined much of his career and an opportunity to examine crime from another perspective.
At the heart of The Abduction Squad is a provocative dilemma: when authorities believe the normal rules cannot deliver the desired result, how far can they go in breaking those rules?

Through Tom Baraza and his unconventional team, Kiriamiti explores the consequences of placing criminals in the service of the state and the risks that arise when the boundary between those enforcing the law and those breaking it begins to disappear.
