Education stakeholders in the Gusii region have agreed on a raft of measures aimed at improving the quality, accessibility and relevance of education through stronger collaboration and innovation.
The resolutions were reached during the inaugural Gusii Education Stakeholders’ Convention held at Kisii University, which brought together national and county government officials, education leaders, scholars, communities and development partners.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba presided over the final day of the two-day convention, which focused on strategies to address challenges affecting the education sector and unlock the region’s potential. The convention was held under the theme “Reimagining Education in the Gusii Region through Collaboration and Innovation for Sustainable Development.”
Participants discussed key areas including improving learning outcomes, expanding access and equity, strengthening school infrastructure, enhancing teacher development and promoting skills-based education. They also examined the need to strengthen inclusive education and accelerate digital transformation to ensure learners are equipped with relevant skills for a changing economy.

The discussions culminated in a series of resolutions and commitments intended to foster closer cooperation between the national and county governments, education institutions, local communities and other stakeholders. The stakeholders agreed that sustained collaboration would be critical in addressing gaps within the education system and ensuring that investments in the sector translate into improved learning outcomes.
Ogamba said the outcomes of the convention provide a framework for collective action towards building a quality, inclusive and relevant education system in the Gusii region. The meeting was attended by Kisii Governor Simba Arati and Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo. Others present included Principal Secretary for the State Department for TVET Dr Esther Muoria, Senator Esther Okenyuri and Kenya’s Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union, Joash Maangi. National and county leaders, education managers, scholars and other sector stakeholders also participated in the deliberations.
