Germany has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening academic cooperation with Kenya and African universities, with education, research and innovation taking centre stage as DAAD scholars from across Sub-Saharan Africa converged at the University of Nairobi.
The renewed commitment emerged on Monday, August 31, 2026, when the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Kenya, H.E. Sebastian Groth, paid a courtesy call on the leadership of the University of Nairobi ahead of the DAAD Scholars Conference hosted by the institution later in the afternoon.
The engagement provided an opportunity to reflect on the far-reaching impact of international scholarships and academic partnerships in developing human capital, strengthening research capacity and creating networks linking African scholars with institutions around the world.
Ambassador Groth highlighted the changing nature of Germany’s relationship with African universities, pointing to a shift from traditional development support towards partnerships anchored on mutual benefit, shared objectives and long-term cooperation.
The message signals a broader transformation in international higher education partnerships, where African universities are increasingly being viewed not merely as beneficiaries of support but as equal partners in research, innovation and knowledge creation.

Representing the University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Leonida Kerubo welcomed Ambassador Groth and expressed appreciation for Germany’s longstanding investment in education.
Prof. Kerubo reflected on the transformative impact of German-supported scholarships, particularly in creating opportunities for researchers and postgraduate scholars to advance their academic careers.
She also spoke from experience, recalling academic journeys of scholars whose lives and careers have been positively influenced by such opportunities.
