More than 450 staff from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions have undergone training aimed at strengthening governance, financial management and student welfare in the sector.
The week-long programme, comprising virtual sessions and three days of physical training in Machakos County, was sponsored by the Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions (KATTI) in collaboration with the Kenya School of TVET.
The training brought together principals, finance officers, guidance and counselling officers and other TVET professionals under the theme, “Strengthening Governance, Financial Integrity and Holistic Student Welfare for TVET Institutional Excellence.”
Participants will be awarded Continuous Development Course (CDC) certificates upon completion of the programme. The course is sponsored by member institutions from both public and private colleges.
Focus on professional development
KATTI National Chairperson Shadrack Tonui described the programme as a transformative initiative that would equip TVET professionals with skills needed to improve their performance and management of institutions.
Tonui said KATTI would continue offering quality training to staff in member institutions, noting that the trainers were drawn from the Kenya School of TVET and other Government agencies.
He thanked member institutions for supporting the programme and urged more colleges to embrace continuous professional development.
“The training aligns with the Government’s agenda of enhancing accountability and better management of TVET institutions,” Tonui said.
He welcomed the ongoing audit exercises in various TVET colleges, saying staff who had undergone the training would be better placed to apply the knowledge gained in their workplaces.
Tonui, who is also the Principal of Kericho Township Vocational Training College, said the CDC certificates would earn participants professional development points that could strengthen their curriculum vitae.
He encouraged principals to participate in similar programmes, saying continuous training was important in improving their professional competencies.
Tonui also backed Government efforts to strengthen human resource functions in TVET institutions, saying improved recruitment processes would help colleges attract qualified professionals.
He further expressed support for Government plans aimed at positioning the TVET sector beyond the Vision 2030 framework.
Training to address workplace challenges
Speaking during the training, Abdullahi Omar Sheikh said the CDC programme was designed to expose TVET officers to practical knowledge and skills to help them overcome challenges encountered in their workplaces.
Sheikh, who is also the Principal of North Eastern National Polytechnic, said the training would eventually be cascaded to professionals across various TVET institutions.
He noted that many employees in the TVET sector were young and required continuous mentorship and professional development as part of a succession management strategy.
Sheikh urged young people to enrol in TVET institutions, saying increased participation would support the Government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
He said strengthening the capacity of TVET staff was critical to ensuring institutions produced skilled graduates capable of contributing effectively to Kenya’s economic development.

Tonui also revealed that KATTI was launching a magazine, dubbed “TVET Insight”, which will showcase and help market member institutions and highlight developments within the sector.
