- KNUT has urged teachers in Mt. Elgon to register for houses under the Government’s Affordable Housing Programme.
- Branch Executive Secretary Patrick Cheptum says 20 per cent of the housing units have been reserved for teachers.
- The appeal comes as the union also encourages teachers to embrace digital services and nurture learners’ sporting talents.
Teachers in Mt. Elgon have been asked to move quickly and register for houses allocated to them under the Government’s Affordable Housing Programme.
KNUT Mt. Elgon Branch Executive Secretary Patrick Cheptum said teachers had a guaranteed opportunity under the programme, with 20 per cent of the housing units reserved for them.
He urged teachers contributing to the Housing Levy to register on the Boma Yangu platform and explore the available housing options.
“Teachers have a right to benefit from the Affordable Housing Programme. The programme has now stabilised after the initial challenges, so I urge all teachers to download the Boma Yangu app, register and explore the available options,” Cheptum said.
He spoke during a homecoming ceremony at Kapsokwony Comprehensive School for Grade Six pupil Abel Kibet, who was part of the Kenyan volleyball team that won silver at the East Africa School Games held in Morogoro, Tanzania.
Teachers urged to embrace digital platforms
Cheptum said digital platforms introduced by KNUT and the Government were also making it easier for teachers to access services and information. He cited Afya Yangu and the KNUT app among the platforms teachers should embrace.
The union official further urged teachers to broaden their role beyond academic instruction by identifying learners with sporting and other talents and supporting them from an early age.
“Talent can change the lives of our learners and put our schools and communities on the national and international map,” he said.
Kibet celebrated after regional success
Kibet’s coach and sports teacher, Tony Chepkirui, said the learner’s journey to the national team had started at zonal level before he progressed through sub-county and national competitions.
“We are very proud of Abel for representing Mt. Elgon Constituency and Kenya at the East Africa level. His achievement shows the potential our learners have when talent is identified and properly supported,” Chepkirui said.
He said Kapsokwony Comprehensive School was developing into a strong sporting institution, with learners having previously competed nationally in athletics and regionally in rugby.
Chepkirui said Kibet’s progress had nearly been halted by financial difficulties until Headteacher Bosis Boit rallied teachers to contribute funds that enabled him to continue participating in competitions.
The young volleyball player thanked those who supported his journey and urged fellow learners to remain focused.
“Discipline and determination have been key to my progress,” Kibet said.

KNUT Mt. Elgon Branch Treasurer Evans Cheseto said Kibet’s success had brought together teachers, parents and the wider community in celebration.
He said the medal was evidence that learners could excel when schools and communities worked together to nurture their abilities.
