Grade 9 learners, parents and teachers have been provided with guidance on the selection of senior school pathways and subjects as they prepare for the transition to Grade 10.
The senior school curriculum offers three main pathways: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), Social Sciences and Arts and Sports Science. This three-pathway structure is provided for in Kenya’s Basic Education Curriculum Framework.
Learners will take seven subjects in total. Four are compulsory core subjects—English, Kiswahili or Kenya Sign Language (KSL), Mathematics and Community Service Learning (CSL)—while three additional subjects are selected according to the learner’s preferred pathway, career interests, aptitude and personality.
Learners may also select a subject from another pathway where the subject combination is available and aligns with their career aspirations.
STEM pathway
The STEM pathway provides opportunities in Pure Sciences, Applied Sciences and Technical Studies.
Pure Sciences include Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, while Applied Sciences include Computer Studies, Agriculture, Home Science and Aviation Technology.
Technical Studies include Building Construction, Woodwork, Metalwork, Power Mechanics, Electricity, Drawing and Design, Media Technology, and Marine and Fisheries.
KICD’s current Grade 10 curriculum designs confirm these broad subject groupings, including Pure Sciences, Applied Sciences and Technical Studies.
Subjects under STEM can prepare learners for careers such as medicine, nursing, pharmacy, engineering, aviation, agriculture, software development, data analysis, cybersecurity, construction and technical professions.
Social Sciences pathway
The Social Sciences pathway consists of Languages and Literature, as well as Humanities and Business Studies.
Learners can pursue subjects such as English Literature, Kiswahili Fasihi, Indigenous Languages, foreign languages including French, German, Arabic and Mandarin Chinese, Kenya Sign Language, History, Geography, Religious Education and Business Studies. KICD’s Grade 10 designs provide for Languages, Foreign Languages, Humanities and Religious Education within the curriculum.
The pathway can lead to careers including journalism, teaching, writing, law, diplomacy, translation, political analysis, surveying, urban planning, entrepreneurship, accounting, banking and economics.
Arts and Sports Science pathway
The Arts and Sports Science pathway caters for learners with talents and interests in creative arts and sporting activities.
It includes Performing Arts such as Music, Dance, Theatre and Film; Visual Arts such as Fine Art and Applied Art; and Sports Science, including Physical Education and Sports and Recreation. Current KICD Grade 10 materials include Music and Dance, Theatre and Film, Fine Arts, Physical Education and Sports and Recreation.
Possible career opportunities include music, choreography, acting, film production, scriptwriting, graphic and fashion design, professional sports, coaching and sports-related professions.
Importance of career assessment
Parents and teachers have been encouraged to support learners in making choices based on their abilities and interests rather than pressure from peers or expectations from adults.
Career assessment should consider a learner’s aptitude, personality, career aspirations, co-curricular activities and available opportunities.
The guidance is intended to help Grade 9 learners make informed subject and pathway choices that match their talents while giving them a strong foundation for future careers.

Education stakeholders have emphasised that early and informed career guidance will be crucial in ensuring learners select pathways that reflect their strengths, interests and long-term aspirations.
