A 54-year-old man has been arrested in Changamwe, Mombasa County, at the conclusion of a two-year investigation into the alleged forgery and use of a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education certificate.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested Awange Oscar Akoth over allegations that he forged and used a fraudulent KCSE certificate in connection with his employment at Kenya Railways Corporation. The suspect had remained at large as investigators pursued him, and was eventually traced to Changamwe, where he was arrested.
The investigation was triggered after Kenya Railways carried out an authentication exercise to verify academic and professional certificates presented by its employees. Akoth’s certificate, purportedly issued by the Kenya National Examinations Council, was flagged during the exercise and subjected to further verification.
According to the DCI, KNEC established that certificate number 624785, purportedly issued in 1993, was forged. Investigators established that grades in three subjects had allegedly been altered from D (Plain) to C (Plain), while the overall mean grade had reportedly been changed from D+ (Plus) to C (Plain).

Following the probe, detectives forwarded the inquiry file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for directions. After reviewing the evidence, the ODPP directed that Akoth be charged with uttering a false document, contrary to Section 353 of the Penal Code, and fraudulent acquisition of public property, contrary to Section 45(1)(a) of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act.
The DCI said Akoth is currently undergoing processing ahead of his arraignment at the Milimani Law Courts, where he is expected to answer to the charges.
