Sotik is poised for a major sporting transformation with the planned construction of a 2,000-seater Dr Joyce Laboso Stadium, a project expected to give young athletes in the area a much-needed platform to develop and showcase their talents.
The proposed facility will be constructed at the 181 Stadium grounds, with Sports Kenya set to oversee its implementation. The project is expected to commence soon following a technical site assessment involving county officials, Sports Kenya and other stakeholders.
The development comes at a time when Bomet County continues to produce talented athletes and teams across various sporting disciplines, but faces challenges linked to inadequate modern sporting facilities.
The new stadium is expected to provide a suitable venue for football, athletics and other sporting activities, while also hosting competitions that could expose local talent to scouts and teams beyond the county.
Youth and Sports CECM Philip Maritim led officials from his department during the site visit, alongside Lands CECM Rosa and a technical team from Sports Kenya.
The team, together with the contractor, assessed the 181 Stadium grounds to determine the requirements ahead of the start of construction.
Maritim said the development would strengthen the county’s efforts to use sport as a vehicle for youth empowerment and talent development.
The facility is also expected to benefit schools, clubs and community teams in Sotik and neighbouring areas by providing a modern venue for training and competitive matches.
Acting Chief Officer for Youths and Sports Dr Nelson Tore was among county officials who accompanied the team during the assessment.
The National Government Technical Public Works team, led by Engineer Angwenyi, also took part in the exercise alongside other key stakeholders.
Boost for young athletes
For Sotik’s young sportsmen and women, the project represents more than a new stadium. It could provide the missing link between raw talent and opportunities to compete at higher levels.

Once completed, the facility is expected to become an important sporting hub for Sotik and the wider Bomet County, supporting competitions, talent identification and youth development programmes.
