- Defending girls’ volleyball champions Kwanthanze Secondary School revived their title defence with a straight-sets victory after losing their opening match.
- Itigo Girls High School also impressed in rugby sevens with a commanding win to boost their semifinal hopes.
- The victories came as teams intensified their push for places at the FEASSSA Games.
Defending national and East Africa girls’ volleyball champions Kwanthanze Secondary School from the Eastern Region returned to winning ways at the ongoing Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term Two National Games at the M-PESA Foundation Academy in Thika, Kiambu County.
After suffering a surprise 3-1 defeat to Mwitoti Secondary School from the Western Region in their opening match, Kwanthanze responded in style with a convincing straight-sets victory over Kahuro Girls from the Central Region. The champions dominated throughout to win 25-13, 25-16 and 25-16, keeping their hopes of retaining the national title alive.
Last year’s national runners-up Kesegon Mixed Secondary School from the Rift Valley Region also maintained their impressive form after defeating Soweto Academy from the Nairobi Region in straight sets of 25-12, 25-19 and 25-19 to register another important victory.
Chesamisi and Matiliku maintain momentum
In the boys’ volleyball competition, Western Region champions Chesamisi Boys produced another commanding performance to beat Moi Forces Academy from the Nairobi Region 25-13, 25-10 and 25-11.
Eastern Region representatives Matiliku Boys also secured maximum points after edging Rithimitu High School from the Central Region 25-22, 25-23 and 25-21 in a closely contested encounter.
Itigo Girls impress in rugby sevens
In girls’ rugby sevens, Rift Valley champions Itigo Girls High School continued their excellent run with a dominant 26-0 victory over Sigoti Girls to strengthen their chances of progressing to the knockout stage.
Head coach Dr Joachim Melly praised his players for maintaining discipline and executing their game plan effectively.
“The girls remained focused throughout the match and played according to our strategy. We are taking one game at a time as we pursue the national title,” said Melly.
In another rugby sevens match, St Joseph’s Girls overwhelmed Mwatate Girls 36-0 to remain among the top contenders.

Meanwhile, in girls’ football, St Joseph’s Girls recovered strongly from their opening 2-0 defeat to Nyakach Girls with a resounding 14-0 victory over Kiaritha Girls, boosting their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
The national championships have entered a decisive phase, with teams battling for places in the semifinals and an opportunity to qualify for the East Africa Secondary Schools Games.
