Defending national and East Africa girls’ volleyball champions Kwanthanze Secondary School from Eastern got their title defence off to a disappointing start after suffering a 3-1 defeat to St. Martha’s Mwitoti from Western on the opening day of the KCB Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national Term Two games at M-PESA Foundation Academy in Thika.
Kwanthanze took the first set 25-22, but Mwitoti fought back to claim the next three sets 25-20, 25-14 and 25-22, handing the champions one of the biggest shocks of the tournament’s opening day.
Central Region champions Kahuro Girls also made an impressive start, beating Wajir Girls in straight sets of 25-19, 25-15 and 25-21 to move top of Pool A.
In Pool B, Rift Valley champions Kesegon defeated Aluor Girls 3-0 after winning 25-20, 27-25 and 25-16, while Nairobi champions Soweto Academy eased past Mwanambeyu Girls 25-8, 25-4 and 25-15.
After the opening round of matches, Kahuro Girls lead Pool A on three points with a set difference of 3, followed by Mwitoti on three points with a 2-set difference. Kwanthanze are third without a point, while Wajir Girls sit bottom.
In Pool B, Kesegon and Soweto Academy are tied on three points, with Kesegon leading in alphabetical order after both posted identical set differences of 3. Aluor and Mwanambeyu are yet to register a point.

Attention now shifts to the second round of fixtures where Kahuro Girls will face Kwanthanze in a crucial Pool A encounter as Mwitoti take on Wajir Girls.
In Pool B, unbeaten sides Kesegon and Soweto Academy will battle for early supremacy, while Aluor meet Mwanambeyu in search of their first victory.
In the boys’ competition, former champions Chepsaita High School opened their campaign with a straight-sets victory over Kiambaa High School, while Masara High School also recorded a 3-0 win against Furaha High School.
Western Region champions Chesamisi High defeated Ruthimitu High 3-0 as Matiliku High edged Moi Forces Academy 3-2 in the only five-set contest of the day.
The results leave Chepsaita High and Masara High tied on three points at the top of Pool A, while Chesamisi High lead Pool B ahead of Matiliku High, who collected two points from their five-set victory.
Moi Forces Academy earned one point despite defeat, with Ruthimitu High remaining bottom without a point. Later today, Chepsaita High will meet Masara High in the headline boys’ Pool A clash, while Kiambaa High play Furaha High.
In Pool B, Chesamisi High face Matiliku High as Moi Forces Academy take on Ruthimitu High.
