Rift Valley girls’ rugby sevens champions Itigo Girls High School have departed for Thika, Kiambu County, determined to win the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Term Two Games title and qualify for the East Africa School Games in Morogoro, Tanzania.
The Nandi County-based side left for the national championships on Friday after receiving an official send-off from the school’s Chief Principal, Juliah Kimenjo Samoei, who challenged the players to uphold discipline, teamwork and determination.
Addressing the team before departure, Samoei expressed confidence in the players’ ability to excel at the national championships, which will be held from August 2 to 6.
“You have worked hard to earn your place at the national games and we believe in your ability. Go and represent Itigo Girls, Nandi County and Rift Valley with pride. Stay disciplined, remain focused and bring the trophy home,” said Samoei.
She noted that the school’s success in both academics and co-curricular activities has been built on discipline, commitment and teamwork, assuring the players of the school’s full support throughout the competition.
Players confident of success
Team captain Gracias Chebet said the squad is heading to Thika with confidence after thorough preparations.
“Our mission is to win the national title and qualify for the East Africa School Games. We have prepared well, we believe in ourselves and we are ready for the challenge,” said Chebet.
Assistant captain Mitchele Mmboga said the players are determined to crown an impressive season with another major achievement.
“We know the competition will be tough, but we are going there to compete, win and make our school proud. We are ready to give our best in every match,” she said.
Coaches back the team’s preparations
Head coach Joachim Melly said the team has maintained its intensity in training since lifting the Rift Valley title and is optimistic about another strong performance.
“The girls have shown great commitment, discipline and unity throughout the season. We are confident they can compete against the best teams in the country and fight for the championship,” said Melly.
The school’s Head of Sports, Elias Kemboi, attributed the team’s success to the unwavering support of the school administration, saying the management has consistently invested in sports development.
Kemboi thanked Chief Principal Samoei for motivating the players and creating an environment where learners excel in both academics and sports.
Itigo Girls booked their place at the national championships after defeating former regional champions St Joseph’s Girls, Kitale, 19-0 in the Rift Valley rugby sevens final in Narok, ending their rivals’ dominance to be crowned the new regional champions.
