Students placed in any of Kenya’s 43 public universities through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) are eligible to apply for government scholarships under the Universities Fund.

The Universities Fund has urged eligible students to submit their scholarship applications through the Higher Education Financing (HEF) portal, noting that the funding is available to government-sponsored students admitted to the listed public universities.

According to the Fund, the approved institutions comprise 36 public chartered universities, one specialised degree-awarding university and six public university constituent colleges.

Among the institutions are the University of Nairobi, Moi University, Kenyatta University, Egerton University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, University of Eldoret, Maasai Mara University, Bomet University, Kibabii University, Rongo University and The Co-operative University of Kenya.

The Open University of Kenya is the only specialised public degree-awarding university on the list.

Student-Centred Funding Model

The scholarships form part of the government’s Student-Centred Funding Model, which combines scholarships, loans and household contributions based on a student’s assessed financial need.

Scholarship awards range from 30 to 70 per cent, depending on the outcome of the needs assessment.

The Universities Fund said first-time applicants for the 2026/2027 academic year should ensure they have received their official admission letters before applying through the HEF portal.

The Fund also cautioned applicants to complete the application process themselves and avoid fraudsters, emphasising that the service is free of charge.

It further noted that only students placed in public universities by KUCCPS qualify for government scholarships, while students enrolled in private universities may only be eligible for government loans under the current funding framework.
