A cat that aspires to be a lion must lose its appetite for rats

A domestic cat pauses in a garden. The accompanying article uses the cat as a symbol of ordinary living, contrasting it with the lion's courage, ambition and pursuit of greater purpose.
  • Ashford Kimani argues that success requires discipline, sacrifice and the courage to abandon unproductive habits.
  • He urges students to replace distractions with purposeful choices that support their dreams.
  • He says lasting achievement begins when learners exchange short-term pleasures for long-term goals.

“A cat that aspires to be a lion must lose its appetite for rats.”

This simple statement carries one of the greatest lessons about ambition, discipline and personal growth. It reminds us that greatness demands a change in mindset, habits and priorities. No one can dream of becoming extraordinary while remaining attached to ordinary distractions.

A house cat and a lion belong to the same family, yet their lives are worlds apart. A cat spends its days chasing rats, hiding from danger and surviving on small victories. A lion, however, hunts bigger prey, commands respect and rules its territory. The difference is not merely physical strength; it is the size of the vision each one lives by.

For students, this lesson is especially relevant. Many young people dream of becoming doctors, engineers, teachers, lawyers, pilots, entrepreneurs or influential leaders. Yet some continue to spend countless hours on activities that add little value to their future.

They become consumed by endless scrolling on social media, gossip, excessive gaming and other distractions. These are the “rats” that consume their time and energy.

Every great achievement begins with the courage to give up something smaller for something greater. Success is not just about what you choose to pursue; it is also about what you choose to leave behind.

Success demands sacrifice

The world’s greatest athletes understand this principle. While others are sleeping, they are training. While others are socialising, they are perfecting their skills. Their success is built on sacrifices that many people never see. They exchange comfort for excellence.

The same applies in education. Top-performing students are rarely the most naturally gifted. More often, they are those who have learned to delay gratification. They understand that temporary pleasure should never destroy permanent opportunities.

They choose revision over procrastination, books over endless entertainment and discipline over excuses.

Many people fail not because they lack talent but because they refuse to outgrow old habits. They desire lion-sized success while maintaining cat-sized lifestyles. They seek outstanding results without outstanding commitment.

Identify the “rats” in your life

In Kenya today, opportunities continue to expand for young people with knowledge, creativity and strong character. The digital economy, entrepreneurship, technology, agriculture and innovation reward those who prepare themselves well.

However, these opportunities cannot be fully seized by individuals whose attention is constantly diverted by trivial pursuits.

Every learner should ask: “What are the rats in my life?”

They may include laziness, bad company, fear of failure, negative thinking, procrastination or unhealthy addictions. Identifying these habits is the first step towards eliminating them.

Choose friends who challenge you to grow

The company we keep also matters. Eagles fly with eagles. Lions hunt with lions.

If your friends celebrate mediocrity, mock hard work or discourage your dreams, they are feeding your appetite for rats.

Surround yourself with people who inspire you to grow, challenge you to improve and encourage you to aim higher.

Greatness is built one day at a time

Another important lesson is that success requires patience. Lions do not become kings overnight. They develop strength through experience, persistence and repeated effort.

Likewise, academic excellence and career success are built one lesson, one assignment, one examination and one disciplined day at a time.

Parents and teachers also have a role to play. Instead of simply encouraging learners to dream big, they should also help them understand the sacrifices those dreams require. Every ambition comes with a price, and the greater the dream, the greater the discipline required.

History is filled with people who refused to settle for small ambitions. They understood that extraordinary lives demand extraordinary choices. They refused to be distracted by temporary pleasures because they remained focused on a bigger future.

Every student has the potential to become a lion in his or her chosen field. But that transformation begins with daily decisions. Greatness is not determined by where you start but by what you consistently choose.

Today, make the decision to lose your appetite for the “rats” that steal your future. Replace wasted hours with productive study. Replace excuses with action. Replace fear with confidence. Replace average thinking with excellence.

Remember, the future belongs to those who are willing to sacrifice today’s comforts for tomorrow’s success. If you truly aspire to roar like a lion, you must first stop chasing rats.
