Teachers have been challenged to extend their influence beyond the classroom by becoming mentors and champions of responsible citizenship among young people.
Uriri Member of Parliament (MP) Mark Nyamita said teachers remain the foundation upon which successful communities are built, noting that their role extends beyond academic instruction to shaping the character and leadership of future generations.
“Every successful learner has a teacher who believed in them. Your influence goes beyond examinations; you shape character and prepare future leaders,” Nyamita said.
The legislator announced plans to launch a mentorship programme targeting students who completed last year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, saying the initiative is intended to guide school leavers as they transition into higher education, employment and other life opportunities.
“Many students leave school unsure about career choices and life decisions. We want to walk with them during this important transition,” he said.
Speaking during a meeting with members of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in Migori, Nyamita urged teachers to help identify students who would benefit from the mentorship programme and encourage them to enrol.

He also called on educators to mobilise school leavers to apply for national identity cards and register as voters, saying active youth participation is vital in strengthening democratic governance.
“An informed and active youth is essential for a stronger democracy and better leadership,” he said.
During the meeting, teachers raised concerns over technological and administrative challenges affecting schools, including frequent system downtimes that disrupt service delivery. Nyamita pledged to engage relevant government agencies to help resolve the issues.
The MP commended teachers for contributing to improved academic performance in Migori County and for ensuring bursary opportunities reach deserving learners, saying their dedication has enabled many children to remain in school.
“Your commitment has transformed lives and opened doors for many children who would otherwise have dropped out of school,” he said.
With political activities expected to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 General Election, Nyamita also appealed for peace and unity, urging residents not to allow politics to divide communities.
“Politics should never divide our communities. The people will make their choice peacefully when the time comes,” he said.
