Narok County is set to host the Rift Valley Secondary School Term two games for the first time in a decade, with thousands of student-players teachers, coaches and officials expected to converge for the regional championships scheduled from July 6 to July 11.

The highly anticipated event will bring together teams from 14 counties across the Rift Valley region in what promises to be a thrilling contest for places in the national championships.

The games will officially be opened on Tuesday, July 7, at William Ole Ntimama Stadium by Narok County Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu.

The opening ceremony is also expected to be attended by Narok Woman Representative Rebecca Tonkei, a member of the National Assembly’s Education Committee.

Participating teams are expected to arrive on Monday, although some schools will begin checking in earlier to acclimatize and familiarize themselves with the competition venues starting tomorrow.

Referees and match officials will arrive on Sunday ahead of a coordination clinic scheduled for Monday.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Narok County Secondary Schools Sports Association Secretary Jacob Barusei said preparations had been completed and the county was fully ready to host the regional showpiece.

“We are delighted to welcome teams from all the 14 counties to Narok. This is a major event in the school sports calendar and we have worked tirelessly to ensure everything is in place. The facilities are ready, accommodation has been organized and we are looking forward to a successful championship,” said Barusei.

Competition matches will be staged at several venues, including Maasai Mara University, Narok Boys High School, Maasai Girls Secondary School, Narok Diploma Teachers Training College and William Ole Ntimama Stadium. The finals of various disciplines will be played at the stadium and Narok Diploma TTC.

Dr. Parmale Kuluo, the chairman of the Local Organising Committee and Narok Central Sub-County Sports Association chairman, said hosting the games was a significant achievement for the county and an opportunity to showcase Narok’s capacity to organize major sporting events.

“This is a proud moment for Narok County. We last hosted the regional games in 2016 and we are determined to make this edition one of the best ever. Our organizing committee has been working closely with County government, education office led by director Peter Magiri and county commissioner office and sports stakeholders to ensure the comfort and safety of all participants,” said Dr. Kuluo.

On his part, Magiri has assured all the participating teams of their secured environment during their stay in the county.

He called on the teachers to be vigilant because they have been given the best facilities to use during the competition.

The tournament coincides with the annual wildebeest migration at the world-famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve, one of Kenya’s leading tourist attractions.

Magiri encouraged visiting teachers, officials and participants to take advantage of the opportunity to experience the spectacular wildlife event.

“We encourage our visitors to spare some time and visit the Maasai Mara. The migration is one of the greatest natural wonders in the world and it offers a unique experience for those coming to Narok for the games,” added Magiri.

The five-day competition is expected to transform Narok into a hive of sporting activity as schools battle for regional honours, with winners earning the chance to represent Rift Valley at the national secondary school games to be held in Thika, Kiambu county later this month.
