Former Industrialization, Trade and Enterprise Development Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) David Osiany has called on Kenyans to continue supporting families grieving the loss of loved ones through Utumishi school fire tragedy, saying the most difficult period often begins after the burial when mourners return to their normal routines.

Osiany spoke after visiting Dennis Nyakeri and his wife Rebecca in Narok County following the tragic death of their daughter, Sheryl, Onderi, a Grade 10 student, who lost her life in the Utumishi inferno.

During the visit, Osiany spent time with the family to offer encouragement and assess how they were coping with the devastating loss. He noted that while grief remains a difficult journey, continued emotional and spiritual support can help bereaved families navigate the painful process of healing.

“The heaviest moment of grief is usually when the burial is done and everyone leaves to return to their daily routines. That is when the reality of loss truly sinks in,” he said.

Osiany expressed gratitude that the family was drawing strength from their faith despite the tragedy.

He said he was encouraged to see them holding on and trusting God during the challenging period.

The former CAS also met the couple’s daughter, Patience, and their niece, Precious, during the visit.

He urged friends, relatives and well-wishers to continue keeping the family in their prayers as they come to terms with the loss.

Sheryl was among the victims who perished in the Utumishi inferno, a tragedy that left families mourning and communities in shock.

Osiany’s visit highlighted the importance of standing with grieving families long after funeral ceremonies have ended, reminding them that they are not alone in their journey toward healing.
