Creativity and scientific curiosity were on full display at Ochunyno Comprehensive and Junior school in  Rachuonyo South Sub-county, Homa Bay County as Grade 7 learners presented innovative projects explaining the human skin during a Competency-Based Education (CBE) exhibition.

Over two weeks, learners researched, designed models, prepared charts and developed presentations illustrating the skin’s structure, functions, common diseases and proper hygiene practices.

Science teacher Brian Kipkemei described the exhibition as an important component of competency-based learning.

“CBE is designed to move beyond memorising facts. It gives learners an opportunity to investigate, collaborate and present solutions based on what they have learnt.”

According to Kipkemei, the project strengthened learners’ research, communication and teamwork skills while improving their understanding of health-related concepts.

“Through this project, students have gained practical knowledge about skin care, disease prevention and personal hygiene while developing confidence in public speaking.”

The learners said the experience transformed the way they approach science lessons.

“Working together helped us understand the topic better. We also learnt how to explain scientific concepts confidently before an audience,” one learner said.

Teachers who evaluated the projects praised the quality of the presentations and the learners’ creativity in explaining complex scientific concepts using locally available materials.

Kipkemei said the school would continue organising practical exhibitions across different learning areas.

“These projects nurture innovation and prepare learners to solve real-life challenges beyond the classroom.”
