The Kenya National Innovation Agency (KENIA) has challenged Kenyan innovators to focus on creating value through innovation rather than simply developing products.
Speaking during the closing ceremony of the Research to Commercialization (R2C) Accelerator Programme, KENIA Chief Executive Officer Dr Tonny Omwansa said sustainable innovation should be measured by its ability to solve real-world problems, create economic opportunities and improve livelihoods.
Dr Omwansa reaffirmed KENIA’s commitment to supporting innovators by strengthening coordination across Kenya’s innovation ecosystem.
He emphasised that closer collaboration among universities, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, industry, government, investors and incubation centres is essential in accelerating the commercialisation of innovations.
According to the CEO, stronger partnerships will help transform research into viable products and services capable of driving economic growth and improving lives.
Empowering young innovators
Dr Omwansa also encouraged TVET institutions to establish student-led innovation clubs to nurture creativity, entrepreneurship and practical problem-solving skills among young people.
The Research to Commercialization (R2C) Accelerator Programme equipped participants with practical skills to transform research findings and innovative ideas into market-ready solutions capable of addressing pressing societal challenges.
