- Matungulu West MCA Raphael Nzau has urged boda boda riders to acquire technical skills for long-term economic security.
- Riders have been encouraged to enrol in nearby TVET institutions while continuing with their transport business.
- Plans are also underway to construct a boda boda shed in partnership with Katine Technical Institute.
Boda boda operators in Matungulu Sub-county, Machakos County, have been encouraged to enrol in technical and vocational training institutions to acquire additional skills that will secure their future beyond the motorcycle transport business.
Speaking while addressing boda boda riders in the Koma area, Matungulu West Ward MCA Raphael Nzau, popularly known as Lucky, urged the operators to take advantage of nearby technical institutions and invest part of their earnings in acquiring practical skills.
Nzau said boda boda riding should not be viewed as a lifetime career, emphasising the importance of preparing for the future through education and skills development.
“You cannot be a boda boda rider all your life. We have a technical institute nearby, and I encourage you to enrol in a course of your choice. Use part of your income to pay school fees and equip yourself with technical skills that will open up more opportunities,” he said.
The MCA observed that many riders joined the boda boda sector after being unable to continue with their education and urged them not to abandon their dreams.
“I know most of you ventured into this business because you could not continue with your studies. I know it is sustainable, but do not lose focus. It is never too late to gain new skills and improve your future,” he added.
Support for boda boda operators
Nzau also revealed that, in partnership with Katine Technical Institute, plans are underway to construct a boda boda shed in the area to provide riders with shelter from harsh weather.
He said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to improve the working environment for boda boda operators while encouraging them to pursue education and skills development.

The MCA reiterated that acquiring technical skills would broaden employment opportunities and enable riders to establish sustainable businesses beyond the transport sector.
