The Government has made fresh appointments and reappointments to the councils of several public universities and national polytechnics in changes aimed at strengthening governance in higher education institutions.

In a special Kenya Gazette Notice dated June 26, 2026, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba announced appointments and reappointments affecting eight public universities and three national polytechnics.

All appointments took effect on June 26, 2026.

Public universities

At Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST), the Cabinet Secretary reappointed David Morang’a Oyugi, Joan Atieno Odawa, Ambassador Ambeyi Ligavo, Isaac Kiprop Chebon and Dr Willis Gesami Omwoyo as members of the university council for another three-year term.

At South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU), Esther Wanjiru was reappointed as a member of the university council for a further three years.

Maasai Mara University recorded both appointments and reappointments. Dr Susan Chebet, Elizabeth Ayoo, Dickson Malanga Shikanga and Agnes Busienei were reappointed as council members, while Prof. Geoffrey M. Ole Maloiy was appointed Non-Executive Chairperson of the council and Millicent Leila Lenguris appointed as a council member.

At Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Joel Yego and Velma Mudanyi Mudasa were reappointed as council members.

At Pwani University, Prof. Mohamed Salim Badamana was reappointed Non-Executive Chairperson of the council alongside Ambassador Benjamin Mweri, Sang Kiptanui David, Fatma Mohammed and Japhet Mvoyi Ria as council members.

Kisii University retained Dr Sara Ruto as Non-Executive Chairperson of the council, while Samson Muchelule was reappointed as a council member.

At Turkana University, Dr Peter Salim Ndemo was reappointed Non-Executive Chairperson together with Jared Oyier, Shadrack Kemoi Lemuywara, Dr Dominic Kimutai Biwott and Carolyne Ekwom as council members.

The Cabinet Secretary also reappointed Prof. David T. K. Serem as Non-Executive Chairperson of the Chuka University Council. Crispus Micheni Ndeke, Linet Kwamboka Maganda, Samuel Gacheru Gitonga, Zephania Rwanda Mbaka and Margaret Makhungu were also reappointed as council members.

National polytechnics

In the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, the Cabinet Secretary appointed new governing councils for three national polytechnics.

At The Nairobi National Polytechnic, Charles Aondo Kimwoni was appointed Non-Executive Chairperson, while Stephen Kimaiyo Masacha, Rose Mwaura, Brenda Oliwa and Peter Mwangi Karanja were appointed council members.

At Taita Taveta National Polytechnic, Esther Kalunda Ndile was appointed Non-Executive Chairperson. Nahashon Ndaretoi Mesula, Anne Aluku and Justin Mabati were appointed members of the council.

At Michuki National Polytechnic, Benson Ngari Kamau was appointed Non-Executive Chairperson. Sheila M. Nyamweya, Lydia Muthoni Miano, Christine Jane Njeri Macharia and Philiph Kiplagat Mitei were appointed council members.

According to the Gazette Notice, all appointments and reappointments are for a three-year term and took effect on June 26, 2026.

The appointments were made under the Universities Act and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Act to strengthen governance, leadership and accountability in Kenya’s public universities and national polytechnics.
