Growing concerns over the quality and integrity of higher education in Kenya have sparked renewed calls for the establishment of a professional association of professors with clear membership criteria and a mandate to safeguard academic standards.

Education stakeholders argue that such a body would serve as an independent voice on matters affecting universities, research quality, academic publishing and the credibility of scholarly titles.

According to proponents, a professional association of professors would provide leadership on emerging challenges facing the higher education sector, including the commercialisation of higher education, the proliferation of academic titles and concerns over declining standards in research and scholarly publishing.

The debate has gained momentum following recent discussions surrounding a PhD student’s publication of articles in a journal that has been widely criticised for lacking rigorous academic standards.

Critics argue that the incident exposes broader weaknesses in quality assurance mechanisms within Kenya’s higher education system.

Advocates of the proposed association maintain that a respected professional body would promote ethical research practices, defend academic integrity and provide guidance on maintaining internationally recognised standards in scholarship.

A unified voice for scholars

Supporters contend that while professional associations exist in many disciplines, Kenya’s university sector lacks a unified platform through which distinguished scholars can collectively defend the reputation and credibility of higher education institutions.

Some observers attribute the absence of such a body to the limited influence of senior scholars in public discourse, arguing that voices advocating for academic excellence are increasingly being overshadowed by commercial interests and declining academic standards.

“The integrity of higher education cannot be left to individual institutions alone,” said one academic commentator.

“There is a need for a credible professional association that can champion quality, defend standards and provide objective guidance on matters affecting universities and research.”

Strengthening higher education

As universities continue expanding and competition for academic recognition intensifies, education experts say Kenya must strengthen mechanisms that promote accountability, research excellence and ethical scholarship in order to preserve the value and credibility of academic qualifications.
