  • Nandi County has earmarked more than Sh846 million for education and vocational training in the 2026/2027 financial year.

  • County officials say the investment is aimed at improving access to education and strengthening skills development.

Nandi County has set aside more than Sh846 million for education and vocational training in its 2026/2027 development budget, with funds earmarked for bursaries, ECDE teacher recruitment, school uniforms and infrastructure development for technical and vocational training centres.

The allocation was unveiled alongside the county’s broader Sh3.89 billion development budget covering health, roads, water and agriculture.

The budget was presented to the County Assembly by the County Executive Committee Member for Finance and Economic Planning, CPA Alfred Lagat.

Bursaries for Needy Learners

The largest single education allocation is the Sh120 million County Bursary Scheme, which is intended to support needy students in secondary schools and tertiary institutions.

The programme remains a key feature of county funding aimed at easing the financial burden on families struggling to keep learners in school.

Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) received substantial funding under the new budget.

The county has allocated Sh134 million for the recruitment and payment of ECDE teachers to address staffing needs across learning centres.

A further Sh92 million has been earmarked for the Nandi County Uniform Programme, which provides school uniforms for ECDE learners.

School Milk Programme Boost

The ECDE School Milk Feeding Programme received Sh90 million.

The initiative seeks to improve nutrition among young learners while supporting local dairy farmers through milk supplied by the Nandi Cooperative Creameries processing plant.

County officials say the programme strengthens the link between education and the county’s agricultural value chain by providing farmers with a reliable market.

Infrastructure and Vocational Training

Ward-level education projects received the largest overall allocation in the sector, with Sh255.6 million set aside for ECDE and Vocational Training Centre (VTC) infrastructure across Nandi’s 30 wards.

The funds are expected to support construction and improvement of classrooms and other facilities, particularly in areas facing infrastructure shortages.

Vocational training institutions also received a boost through a Sh25 million County VTC Capitation Grant.

The grant is intended to help institutions meet operational expenses, including training materials and utility costs.
