Utumishi Academy fire victims remembered in requiem mass at Gilgil Stadium

Families, friends, and members of the public are gathering today, Friday, June 12, 2026, for a memorial service honouring the 16 girls who lost their lives in the tragic Utumishi Academy school fire.

The requiem mass will be held at Gilgil Stadium, where hundreds of mourners, government officials, religious leaders, and members of the public are expected to gather to honour and pay their last respects to the young victims.

Fifteen hearses were parked at Naivasha Funeral Home on Friday morning to convey the bodies to the memorial service, after which they will be handed over to their respective families for burial arrangements.

The government had pledged to give KSh200,000 to each bereaved family and to cover all funeral costs, including mortuary fees, coffins, transportation of the bodies, and expenses for the requiem mass. It also vowed to meet the medical expenses of those injured in the incident.

One of the victims, Zuhura Rama, was buried on Sunday in Mkwakwani Village in Kwale County after her body was released early to the family, becoming the first among the 16 girls to be laid to rest.
