Eight years after the death of renowned Kisii University student leader Moffat Migiro, his mother, Rachel Nyakeya Mwati, is now making an emotional appeal to former President Uhuru Kenyatta and wellwishers to help her secure land and build a home.

Rachel recalls that before his untimely death in 2018, Moffat had caught the attention of the then president, who reportedly promised to support him and had invited him to State House.

However, the visit never took place as Moffat passed away before the planned meeting could materialize.

According to Rachel, the promise remains a source of hope as she struggles to rebuild her life years after losing her son.

Moffat, a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Statistics student at Kisii University, was widely known for his leadership and academic excellence, he was university students council secretary, but he died at the age of 33 before he could graduate.

His death was a devastating blow to his family. Rachel says Moffat was the only one among her four children to attain tertiary education and was seen as the family’s beacon of hope.

The former student leader also left behind two children.

Speaking about her current situation, Rachel said life has become increasingly difficult. A single mother, she survives through casual jobs, including domestic work, but the income is barely enough to meet her basic needs.

“I sleep in Rongai, where I struggle to pay rent, all my three children are not well established, and life has been very difficult.” she said.

Rachel recalled that when Moffat fell ill, his body stayed for two months in hospital before his burial. Friends and well-wishers organized fundraising efforts to help the family give him a decent burial.

Today, she says her greatest wish is to own a small piece of land and build a house where she can live without the constant burden of rent.
