The academic community at Laikipia University is mourning the untimely death of Dr. Florence Opondo, a respected lecturer in the Department of Commerce under the School of Business.
According to a condolence message released by the university, Dr. Opondo passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2026, while undergoing specialized treatment in Nairobi.
The institution described her death as a great loss to the university fraternity, colleagues, students and all those who interacted with her professionally and personally.
Dr. Opondo was widely recognized for her expertise in agribusiness management, strategic management, food systems and youth entrepreneurship.
She served as a lecturer and researcher whose work focused on food security, agricultural value chains, climate change and empowering young people through agripreneurship initiatives.
According to the University, her academic journey reflected dedication and excellence. She held a Postdoctoral qualification in Agribusiness Management from the University of Pretoria in South Africa, a PhD in Agribusiness Management from Egerton University, an MBA in Strategic Management and a Bachelor of Agribusiness Management.

Throughout her career, Dr. Opondo contributed immensely to research and mentorship.
She participated in international conferences and workshops across Africa and beyond, publishing scholarly work on cassava commercialization, food systems, youth agrienterprises and sustainable agriculture.
She was also actively involved in projects promoting entrepreneurship among university students and rural communities.
Colleagues and students have continued to pay tribute to her as a passionate educator, mentor and leader whose commitment to academic excellence and youth empowerment inspired many.
In its tribute, the university extended heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, students and colleagues during the difficult period of mourning.
