Homa Bay Senator leads fundraiser for Usao Mixed Secondary School dormitory

Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’ addresses residents during a fundraiser for the construction of a modern dormitory at Usao Mixed Secondary School in Homa Bay County.

Homa Bay County Senator Moses Kajwang’ on Thursday presided over a fundraiser at Usao Mixed Secondary School to mobilise resources for the construction of a modern dormitory. The funds drive was attended by Finance CS John Mbadi, among other local leaders.

Addressing the gathering, Senator Kajwang’ underscored the importance of good hostels for the success of learners. He noted that quality boarding facilities directly impact student performance, discipline and safety.

“When students have a decent, secure place to sleep and study, we reduce absenteeism and long, dangerous walks to school. A good dormitory is not a luxury — it is a learning tool,” Kajwang’ said.

He added that congested or dilapidated hostels undermine concentration and expose learners to risks that lead to school dropouts. The proposed dormitory at Usao Mixed Secondary will ease overcrowding and provide a conducive environment for revision and mentorship programmes after classes.

The senator promised to ask the area MP to consider support from the NG CDF kitty and called on the Ministry of Education, well-wishers and the county government to supplement the community’s efforts.

Finance CS John Mbadi promised to solicit funds from friends towards the completion of the project. He asked learners to use their time well in studies instead of involving themselves in social evils such as drug abuse at the expense of their education.

School Principal Mary Atieno said the current boarding space only accommodates 60 students against a population of 210 boarders, forcing many to share beds or sleep on the floor.

Kajwang’ further challenged parents to prioritise their children’s education, stating that infrastructure investment must go hand in hand with parental responsibility and community vigilance.
