The growing influence of schools sports in nurturing talent and promoting education will once again be in the spotlight this Saturday, May 10 during the launch of the fifth season of Safaricom Chapa Dimba at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium, Mamboleo in Kisumu.
Top learning institutions from Western Kenya are set to headline the event, with the much-anticipated girls’ football clash between national champions Butere Girls and Nyakach Girls popularly known as Plateau Girls expected to attract huge attention from fans, teachers and scouts.
The match, branded as the “Mashemeji Derby,” is more than just a football contest.
It highlights the increasing role schools are playing in developing young talent while balancing academics and co-curricular activities.
Both Butere Girls and Nyakach Girls have built strong reputations in school football, producing disciplined and competitive teams that continue to shine in regional and national championships.
Their meeting at the Chapa Dimba launch is expected to showcase the depth of talent within secondary schools and the growing investment in girls’ sports.

Another exciting schools’ fixture will see Kakamega High School alias Green Commandos face Kisumu Day in a battle expected to revive long-standing football rivalry between the institutions.
The two schools are known for strong football traditions and passionate student support during competitions.
Education stakeholders have continued to emphasize the importance of sports in schools, saying football not only nurtures talent but also improves discipline, teamwork and academic motivation among learners.
The Safaricom Chapa Dimba tournament has become one of Kenya’s biggest youth football platforms, offering opportunities for students to gain exposure, mentorship and scholarships while pursuing education.
Organizers say this year’s edition aims to strengthen grassroots football and create more opportunities for young players to transition from school competitions to professional football.
The launch event will also feature matches involving community and youth teams, including Gor Mahia Youth against AFC Leopards Youth, further underlining the connection between school football and elite talent development.
