President William Ruto has commended teacher unions in the country for their continuous engagement with the government on issues affecting their members.
Speaking in Vihiga during the Labour Day celebrations held on May 1, 2026, the Head of State said the sustained talks between the government and unions have led to significant gains without conflict.
The President noted that the engagements have contributed to the streamlining of the Social Health Authority (SHA), improving access to healthcare services for teachers across the country.
He pointed out that in the past, teachers could only access about 900 health facilities, but the number has now been expanded to 9,000 facilities nationwide.
Ruto reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of teachers, saying continued dialogue remains key to addressing their concerns.
He lauded the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) for choosing engagement over confrontation in resolving issues affecting their members.
